Obituary of Maria Brath

Brath, Maria (nee Hauser) passed away at Scarborough Retirement Residence, on Tuesday April 12, 2022, beloved wife of her predeceased husband Wilhelm (Bill), in her 91st year. Dear mother of Bill (Patti), Veronika, Margarete (Fritz) and Richard (Bayla). Grandmother of Steven (Riley), Mark (Julie), Carly (Luke), Emilie (Matt), Peter (Jamie), Abe (Brigita), Hana and six wonderful great grandchildren.

Maria will be sadly missed by her sister Magdalena and her many cousins, nieces and nephews in Germany and France, as well as many alumni from St. Benedict's School where she was the librarian for 18 years. Scarborough Retirement Residence will miss her cheerful smile, hall walks and motherly assistance.

Maria was born in Budaörs, Hungary into a community of fruit farmers. Religion and faith in God were central to her everyday life. Maria was a teenager when her family was deported to Germany in the aftermath of World War II.  She started a family and together with her husband made the bold decision to emigrate to Canada, even though she knew nothing of the culture or English. Settling in Sarnia, they formed an extended family with friends from Budaörs and Germany. The community welcomed them as they helped with the local churches, schools, and later as a volunteer for many years at St. Joseph's Hospital.
 

Friends will be received by the family on Tuesday April 19, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at McKenzie & Blundy Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 431 Christina St N, Sarnia, ON. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday April 20, at 11am at St. Benedict's  Church. The funeral will be livestreamed and can be viewed by going to St. Benedict's Church, Sarnia YouTube channel. Interment at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery.
