I am so sorry to hear this news. I was one of many kids who traipsed through the Zanyk house over the years after school or on Saturdays. Joe will always be Mr. Zanyk to me. He was always puttering around building stuff, fixing stuff. He always had a quick smile and was genuinely interested in each of us. The tribute was lovely to read. A man well loved by his family and friends.
My condolences to all of the family, especially my old friends Sheila and Marien. I still grieve my Dad and know this is a very tough time. Barb Francis

Joe Zanyk was a very good man. While out for a walk and thinking about Joe, lots of memories flooded in, along with some words to describe him that all coincidentally started with g....gracious, gentle, gentleman, genius, gregarious, genuine and I'm sure there are many more. There is one more that I've certainly been feeling and that is grateful for having had privilege of knowing Joe and being the beneficiary of his kindness over the years. The world has lost a very good man, but thankfully, memories remain.
Love to Kathreen and all the family.
Sincerely,
Mitch, Jackie and Family

With all my other family in Scotland, Joe was as close to an uncle that I was going to get. As a collugue and friend of my father and mother, Rob and Mollie Elliott, Joe was frequently part of my life. His big bear hug and crushing handshake (with 3/4 of a hand) were his trademark. I remember his home on Retlaw, and helping to wire his new house on Willard. Joe and Kathreen were frequent dinner guests, and I often came home from a Saturday date to find a well lubricated bunch still partying on. He and my dad were a talented team that designed and installed several of the first gas turbine co-generation power plants in the world. I'd like to think that if Rob had not been in poor health that he would have joined Joe's consultancy. So my fondest wishes to Kathreen, Sheila, Jan, and Marion (Mimi) and their spouses. Joe will always be in my memory, and i am sure he is enjoying a nice Martini or Manhattan.

I was very saddened to learn of Joe’s passing and my heart goes out to Sheila and everyone in his huge family. What an incredible person! He touched my life in many ways as a young person and I will always remember his wide smile, sparkling eyes and abundant kindness. They were beautiful expressions of an enormous heart. Although Joe’s physical absence is deeply and painfully felt, his legendary gifts to this world will ensure that his energy lives on for generations to come.

Joe was our frequent guest and great contributor at Western's Research Park in Sarnia.
He had a positive enthusiasm, intellectual curiosity, generosity, and foundational engineering knowledge. All of which he shared freely with professors, students, and administrators.
People like Joe built "industrial Canada" and created much of the wealth and jobs that Canadians enjoy.

Sending my thoughts to Joe's family. Joe worked with my dad at Dow and I would run into him while we were walking our dogs. We'd always stop to visit as he always remembered me. We'd talk about my dad. Hadn't seen them in a few years and missed our visits

We saw him on the Watson trail all the time. Many times during the winter on skis! Always a pocket full of biscuits for Coopers friends. Blackwell Brad paid a tribute to him on the James farm pond

It is shocking to hear that Mr. Zanyk (to me) has passed. For some reason, I thought Joe would live forever. He had an exuberance that seemed to be akin to the energizer bunny. I have very vivid memories of visiting the Zanyk household on Willard Ave. as a pre-teen - awkward, shy and very reserved. What still sticks with me is the interest that both Joe and Kathreen showed in me. They were so gracious and welcoming it was kind of intimidating as a total introvert. I will remember Joe as a caring and loving friend of the family that always showed an interest in me and took time to ask very relevant questions. He was alway genuine. I also remember my Mom (Jane ) telling people that Joe had the greatest hugs and was over the top welcoming. If Jane was alive today she would have mentioned the hugs for sure.
