Ruth Gelinas

Obituary of Ruth Mary Gelinas

GELINAS, Ruth Mary, 87, of Sarnia, Ontario, passed away on November 5, 2020. She was born to parents Aaron and Catherine Wicks, on March 3, 1933. (3333!)

Beloved wife of Ernie Gelinas, Ruth met Ernie in 1954 in Halifax at a Navy dance.  They were married six months later on January 8, 1955.  Just over a year later in February of 1956 they started their family when they welcomed Cyril, and subsequently Catherine and Angie.

Ruth is survived Ernie Gelinas, loving and devoted husband of 65 years; Cyril Gelinas, loving son and eldest child; Angie Gelinas, loving daughter and youngest child; Catherine Gelinas of London, ON; Ruth’s Nova Scotia family - siblings Barbara, Patricia (Pat); Jim, Dennis, and Christine and their children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death many years ago by her older sister Elizabeth whose surviving children will remember Aunt Ruth fondly.

Ruth leaves a wonderful group of friends in Sarnia: Doreen, Michelle, Diane, and their respective spouses, as well as Marian and George - neighbours, friends, and travel companions who’ve been so kind and caring to Ruth and Ernie since that day in 1976 when the Gelinas family moved across the street.

Mom (Ruth) will be remembered for her love of jiving with Dad (amazing dancers!), her feistiness and spirit, her love of card games, and perhaps, the unbridled joy she took in her and dad’s years of winter road trips that always led to big stories in little towns across the US and usually situated them at their favourite spots in Nevada.

Due to the restrictions of COVID-19, cremation has taken place with private inurnment at Our Lady of Mercy Mausoleum. We have entrusted McKENZIE & BLUNDY FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE, 519-344-3131 with the arrangements. A loving and joyful memorial will be held once we can gather safely again.
