What a maestro of teaching. I was one of Mr. Burger's students in Grade 7 at Sacred Heart back in the early '80s. In his class, we were all brats, yapping and carrying on as kids are. An ordinary teacher would get angry and deal out punishments, or check out and give up. Mr. Burger took all that youthful energy and curiosity and rebelliousness and channeled it expertly, playing us like individual instruments (to belabour the metaphor) and unlocking our potential. I remember him reading us books like Jonathan Livingston Seagull and S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders, or taking the whole class into Canatara Park to make a student film (Ontario Jones and the Temple of Insults was the title). In a wonderful way, that school year was a movie of its own. By staying true to his own interests, and treating each of us like future adults, he elevated his classroom to a whole new level. His family must be so proud of him. I will never ever forget him.

Mr. Burger was my grade 8 teacher. He was my favourite teacher. His humour was amazing. We had a lot of fun listening to Jim Croce, Elton John, Harry Chapin albums for classes like art. For phys ed class, Mr. Burger would be right in there playing softball with us. The best part was that he was wearing bell bottom dress pants, shirt and tie, and high heeled shoes( it was the seventies). We brought squirt guns to class one time, he confiscated them and would use them on us, when we had our heads down at our desks. He had a gift of bringing out our strengths and we learned so much. Thanks for being my teacher, miss you!

I owe my start to basketball to Mr Burger for making me practice my dribbling skills in my basement every night for half a hour. I felt he empowered me to assert myself with sports and eventually in life. Cant thank him enough for turning Our Lady of Mercy Parish Hall into a gym we could play in ( basketball, volleyball ) even for my kids. Cant forget how he entered OLM as a coed team for touchfootball and we won the championship . Educationally he taught outside the box and great way to learn. Such a blessing in so many ways. Thank you Ray Burger. Rest in peace.

My fondest memories of Mr. Ray Burger include the many jokes he told in class.. he made it a point to interrupt any lesson to tell a joke, whether or not it related to the lesson... (What’s a metaphor? I don’t know! What’s a Meta-phor you!) (I left my harp in Sam Frank’s Disco.) While I did not have the privilege to be coached by him I remember he inspired a love of basketball. I still have the Pistons mini-ball I received in his class, and that year, the Pistons won their first NBA title. I remember him for his enthusiasm for knowledge in general and how he always tried to make every student in his class feel important and special. Finally, I remembered an occasion where I saw him stand up for some small kids who were being tormented by an older kid. It was surprising to see, but at the same time reassuring to see that this man also as a protector. He used the novel study, “The Outsiders” (which clearly had a special place in his heart) to introduce to us the Robert Frost poem he quotes, “Nothing Gold Can Stay”. He made us all better people for knowing him. He lives on in our memories. Thank you, Mr. Burger.

My deepest condolences to all family and friends of this great man. Mr. Burger was my high school basketball coach and as so many others have said, his patience and sense of humour were like no other.
I will never forget how in his retirement, he took over my grade eight class for an entire week on a moments notice when I found out my dad had died. I left no lesson plans but I am quite certain that week was the best for those grade eight students that year. Thank you Mr. Burger.

I met Ray at various schools when I was a substitute teacher. He was consistently one of the friendliest members on staff and made me feel welcomed and respected. He was affirming, and his words of encouragement meant a lot to me. I also had the opportunity to witness and enjoy his great sense of humour. More importantly, I could see how the students loved him, and how he connected with them. Whether as teacher, coach, person ... Ray impacted numerous individuals, as is evidenced by the outpouring of memories shared. RIP Ray.

We have many happy memories growing up in the Jack and Marg Burger family and all the family get-togethers put on by both the Renaud and Schnekenburger families. Everyone got a hug at that time and were well looked after. Ray was my second youngest brother and will be greatly missed. I fondly remember the time he held our family Christmas get-together at his house and he gave each family member a long-sleeve cotton shirt with Bozo the Clown on the front. I still have my shirt and have photos taken with all the family members (8 children and our parents) wearing them. We had many friendly talks at Stokes Inland and I took a photo of him when he became the vidio games champion there. He loved putting together vidio games for his friends to play and he had many friends. His former students and former teachers often asked me how he was doing. We'll all miss him!!

My Uncle Ray will be dearly missed. Ray was a legend - loved as a coach and teacher - and as a great man. I have so many great memories of being around Ray as a child and teenager - from our extended Burger family gatherings in St. Thomas to deep and meaningful heart filled discussions with Ray and Sarah that often ran late into the evening (or early morning hours) when I would babysit Jay. Ray's love, passion, patience and dedication are reflected clearly in his children - from the miraculous blossoming of Jay to the wonderful and compassionate adults they have all grown into. Ray's passing is a painful loss - but I hope you can find comfort in all of the great memories that you made with Ray when he was still physically with us.

Thanks for all the great memories Mr Burger!
I’ve been a teacher for 17 years now and I value so much of what I learned from you - relationship-building, a sense of humour, patience and giving difficult kids extra chances.
To this day I still know every single lyric to ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire’ because of you and I always laugh every time I hear that song from the Sound of Music - ‘Ray, a name, I call myself’ lol

Charles and Marian Winegard....All our kids were lucky to have had Ray as a teacher at St Helen’s. He truly offered many wonderful aspects to teaching and to life that were not in any textbook.
He volunteered many hours coaching our girls basketball. They loved him as a coach but more so as a wonderful human being.
Our hearts go out to his family. He will be remembered and missed by many.

Very sorry to hear of Mr. Burger’s passing. He was my first basketball coach. His love for basketball was contagious, his style and sense of humour made it fun - including the infamous candy practice at the end of every season. He was one of my biggest supporters in grade school, and I will be forever grateful for his time, support, and encouragement. He will be dearly missed. This made me so sad to read today and I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Burger, my grade 7 teacher, was far and away my favourite teacher of all time. I think we underestimate the impact great teachers have on our lives. I talk about him to this day all the time. He had a gift and was born to be a teacher and a coach- he made learning fun. Everyone wanted to be in his class. I am very grateful to have been one of the lucky ones to have known you. I appreciate you erasing the T.O.’s at the end of most days. Thanks for the memories Mr. B and for all the days when it was just a better idea to play some soccer-baseball. Stay gold and rest in peace xo.

I am so sorry for your loss. Mr. Burger taught me in grade 7 at St. Helen's and coached me for several seasons. Mr. Burger had a huge impact on so many of our lives, not only because of his passion and dedication to basketball in Sarnia, but the way he went about his time teaching and coaching. I think of this poem and Mr. Burger often when I watch the sunset or rise. He truly was one of a kind and was gold in my eyes. We all knew how much he cared about us and I am forever thankful I was one of the lucky ones to have been influenced by him. Mr. Burger made the world a better place. My thoughts go out to his family and close friends. xoxo

We had so many fond memories growing up. There were many special times we all got together as cousins and Ray was an exceptional story teller for us kids who were a little younger. Ray spent almost every summer of his teen years at our house working with my dad and brothers in construction. Many, many fond memories.
I found a couple of pictures of us all growing up.

This is heartbreaking. Mr. Burger was my favourite teacher at St. Helen’s. I have often told my kids stories of how funny he was and how so many memories from his grade 7 class have stayed with me over the decades.
I remember going to the office to sing jingles promoting hotdog days (Hot Diggity Dog!) over the announcements.
I remember him reading The Outsiders to us.
I remember our weekly spelling unit test where he would put each word into a pun-filled sentence. I remember T.O.s (time outs for touching others, talking out, etc...)
I remember being a backup dancer/singer in his group at the school lip sync show - he was Paul Simon.
I even babysat his three kids a bunch of times and remember we always had to watch Three Amigos because it was Jamie’s favourite.
Mr. Burger was a kind, joyful man with the best sense of humour. I’m glad I had the opportunity to know him.
