PURSELL, William, "Bill" - Surrounded by his loving family at Bluewater Health, Palliative Care, Sarnia, Bill Pursell died on Monday, June 12, 2017 at the age of 88. Beloved husband of the late Theresa "Terry" (2006). Loving dad of Duncan (Liz), Ian (Charlane), Iona, Terry "Cookie" (Gordon) and Fiona. Legendary Papa of Tara (Ken), William (Lauren), Ian (Kinga), Paul, Jamie, Graeme, Meaghan (Simon), James, Cameron, Caitie and Ruby. Great-grandfather of Gavin, Max, and Levi. Brother to Duncan Pursell in Australia, the remaining member of his five siblings. Dad, Papa, Bill, Willie or Mr. Pursell. No matter how you knew him, he was resolutely considered a gentleman defined by his integrity, his love of his family and his very positive attitude towards life. He equally loved Lakeshore as much as his beloved Scotland and his childhood home Davaar House in Campbeltown. A member at Sarnia Golf Club for 54 years, he was still golfing last season and only the poor weather kept him from teeing off this year. He shot his age at 81. He enjoyed table tennis and treasured new friends at the Strangway Centre. We were never sure what it was, but he played pickle ball until a hamstring injury in 2016. He made marmalade just last month which he shared widely and was obsessed with its consistency. We continued the tradition of Lakeshore holidays with him cooking the turkey and these dinners were central to him and to us in every way. A prolific writer, a few of his memoirs have been published in The Kintyre Magazine and the spring edition carried his most recent one. He grew more proud of his heritage as the years went on and he kept up a number of relations in his home town of Campbeltown. He was called upon yearly to recite In Flanders Fields at St. Andrews Church and in 2016, he did it from memory with no notes and often did the Ode to the Haggis or Toast to Canada at their Burns Supper. He loved going to the Bridge to take walks, talk to the locals fishing, and read his Globe & Mail and maybe take a wee snooze in the car. He absolutely adored his grandchildren and they in turn adored him always anxious to tell him, show him or write to him about their school, their jobs, their relationships and pretty much anything. According to them, he was "such a legend" and this sentiment was felt by everyone who had the privilege of meeting him. He was wise, kind, current in many sports and myriad political issues. Dad was obsessed with his bird feeder and the weather as the Scottish tend to be. His absence is unimaginable but his legacy sustains us. As an expression of sympathy, friends may wish to send memorial donations to Bluewater Health Foundation, Palliative Care through www.bwhf.ca or mail to Bluewater Health Foundation, 89 Norman Street, Sarnia N7T 6S3. Private family arrangements arrangements entrusted to The McKENZIE & BLUNDY FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION CENTRE. Messages of condolence & memories may be left at www.mckenzieblundy.com
