Obituary of Maria Iacobelli

IACOBELLI, Maria (nee Virgilio) – Peacefully surrounded by her family at Marshall Gowland Manor, Maria passed away on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the age of 81.  Beloved wife of the late Leonello (2015).  Loving mother of Rino (Kendra) Iacobelli, Robert (Anissa) Iacobelli and Dino Iacobelli, all of Sarnia. Cherished Nonna of Joshua, Nicholas, Taylor, Vittoria and Mia. Dear sister of Filomena (late Arduino) Recchia.  Sister-in-law of Adelaide (late Augusto) Greco, Onoria (late Onorio) Iacobelli and Maria (Romano) Esposito. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.  Predeceased by her parents Antonio & Nunziata Virgilio and father and mother-in-law Erminio & Vittoria Iacobelli, brothers Ferdinando (Libra) Virgilio, Alberto (Rita) Virgilio and Tommaso (Palmina) Virgilio, her brothers and sisters-in-law; Anna (Pasquale) DeCarolis, Orlando (Violanda) Iacobelli and Iolanda (Giovanni) DeCarolis.

Maria was born in Casalvieri, Italy on January 16, 1944 and later immigrated to Roseville Michigan.  Her life in Sarnia began on October 22, 1966, when she married her beloved Nello.  Here they raised their children and later, welcomed daughters-in-law and grandchildren into the family. Maria was so devoted to her family, always ready to lend a hand when needed.  She adored her grandchildren and enjoyed watching them play hockey, soccer, basketball and football. She treasured every moment spent together. Maria also loved gathering with extended family on weekends.  She enjoyed cooking and was famous for making the best #10 pizza, which she shared with many over the years.

Maria loved spending time in her flower garden and creating beautiful summer pots.  She enjoyed taking part in activities with the Italian pensioners club, from bingo and summer picnics to bus excursions. She had a close circle of friends with whom she visited often, many coffees and conversations were had on Bond Street.  Later she maintained many connections with friends by phone.  Maria will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be held at the McKenzie & Blundy Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 431 N. Christina St., Sarnia on Monday, April 21, 2025, from 6 – 9 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church on Tuesday, April 22^nd  at 11:00 am .
